Birch Polypore, Piptoporus betulinus
Because it is found only on living or dead birch trees, this common bracket fungus is easy to identify. The entire structure starts out white, but the pores on the underside turn brown with age. Dried pieces of this persistent bracket fungus have long been used to keep an ember alive for starting a fire.
