A Tour of the Deer Island Treatment Plant
Today Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation members drove to Deer
Island for a tour of the enormous sewer treatment plant that
dominates the island. We gathered in a classroom for a description
of the treatment processes, then walked through the extensive
grounds and buildings, observing the equipment.
The upper photo is of some of the clarifying basins, where water
is cleaned through aeration, by pouring over numerous small
waterfalls.
The lower photo shows the enormous digester modules, where sludge
is converted to sterile biosolids.
