          Fascinating Fungi of Fresh Pond
Mycologist Larry Millman led a group of 25 mushroom enthusiasts
though the woods near Neville Place, identifying about 40 species, including
six that are new to the Fresh Pond Reservation fungi species list, which
          now numbers 198.
Photos, Top row left to right: The group gathers
in the woods, Larry displays a specimen.
Middle row: Piptoporus betulina (Birch Polypore), Perodoxylon
petersii = Camarops petersii (Dog's Nose Fungus), Peziza varia
(an unusually large specimen), a Bolete.
Bottom row: Amanita muscaria (Fly Agaric), a Coral Mushroom,
and Brefeldia maxima, the largest of all slime molds. This last
specimen, although not colorful, is nonetheless interesting.
          Larry's
          new field guide,
          Fascinating Fungi of New England,
is available at local bookstores and online.
