Visit Fresh Pond Reservation's Woodland Garden
The Woodland Garden was created by two Friends group members, Suzanna
Black and Elizabeth Wylde, who initially volunteered to remove weeds
from a small shrub garden near the Perimeter Road. Over time, we expanded
the weeded area beyond the shrubs, then began planting perennials and
shrubs. We limited the plantings to species that are considered to have
been native to the pre-colonial area that is now Middlesex County. In
2010 Betsy Meyer joined us during our weekly Tuesday morning weeding
and watering sessions. This photo shows a small area with ferns, grasses,
and Purple-flowering Raspberries (Rubus odoratus.)
For the Woodland Garden visit, we put name labels on many of the plants,
identifying most of the approximately 110 species in the garden, and
gave visitors a printed species list.
