A Survey of Aquatic Plants at Black's Nook
During this Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation program, participants
helped collect plant specimens from Black's Nook, then took them indoors
to identify them using dichotomous keys. The home-made collecting tool
made, from the metal heads of two garden rakes and nylon rope, is visible
in the foreground.
This year we found a greater variety of native pondweeds than we did
last year. New to the list are Sonewort (Chara sp.), Duckweed
(Lemna sp.), White Water Lily (Nymphaea odorata), Emergent
Smartweed (Polygonum sp.), and Big Duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza)
