Introduction to the Kingsley Park Bioswale

Participants in this Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation program inventoried the plants and animals living in this varied habitat. In addition to identifying some 66 plant species we observed Goldfinches, Monarch Butterflies, and this male Twelve-spotted Skimmer (Libellula puchella). The Friends group has "adopted" the bioswale as a place to study plants and animals, to observe changes from one year to the next, and to keep clear of invasive plant species. About twelve weeding sessions in 2007, mostly involving the removal of burdock and mugwort, have made a big improvement in the appearance of the area. Currently the predominant plants are milkweeds, grasses and asters.
