Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum trilobum)

The bright red berries of this native shrub can be made into a tasty sauce, with the addition of plenty of sugar. Birds initially find the berries too tart for their taste, but in late winter when they are very hungry because there is not much else to eat, they will strip the bushes of their withered fruit.
