These events are FREE and open to the public. Children are welcome in the company of an adult.

Purple Loosestrife Fall Data Collection

Date: Saturday, November 1
Time: 10 am to 12 noon
Meeting Place : We will meet at Maher Park and walk to Little Fresh Pond
650 Concord Ave

Help Reservation staff monitor biologically-controlled invasive purple loosestrife at Little Fresh Pond! This is a day of science-in-action, so come prepared to collect data in the field. Pants, long sleeves and a water bottle are strongly recommended. No experience necessary! Open to ages 8 and up; children must be accompanied by an adult assistant. Knowing Trees by their Buds

Dates: Sunday, November 2
Time: 1 to 3 pm
Meeting Place :
Maynard Ecology Center, basement of Neville Place
650 Concord Avenue

Did you know that you can identify a tree in winter by looking at its buds? Careful examination will reveal that the buds of each species are unique. Ranger Jean Rogers will show you how and will lead this walk from the Maynard Ecology Center to the nearby Lusitania Wet Meadow. Please register for this program by Oct 26 so we can be sure to have enough materials available. A Tour of the Water Purification Facility

Date: Monday, November 3
Time: 6 to 7:30 pm

Find out how water that falls as rain in the suburbs 10 miles west of Cambridge is transported to Fresh Pond and then tested, treated and delivered to the city's residents and businesses! Members of the Cambridge Water Department staff will describe the process, answer your questions, and give a tour of the building. Wake Up and Weed

Date: Thursday mornings through November 20
Time:
10 am to 12 noon
Meeting Place: Volunteer Trailer, Cambridge Water Department Parking Lot
250 Fresh Pond Parkway

Join our weed-warrior crew! We are Fresh Pond citizens dedicated to keeping invasive plants at bay for the benefit of wildlife, water and humans alike. No experience or long-term commitment necessary! All tools are provided; sturdy shoes, pants, long-sleeves and a water bottle are strongly recommended. Autumn Bird Walk

Date: Saturday, November 8
Time: 9 to 11 am
Meeting Place: Register for parking and meeting information.

We will look for migrating songbirds and waterfowl that stop at Fresh Pond Reservation to rest and feed while on the way south for the winter. We may also see a variety of year-round avian residents. We have a telescope for close looks at ducks on the water, and binoculars to lend you if you don't have your own. Beginners are welcome! Grow Your Own Wildflowers

Date: Sunday, November 9
Time: 1:30 to 3:30 pm
Meeting Place: Maynard Ecology Center, basement of Neville Place
650 Concord Avenue.

We will provide everything you need (containers, potting mix, seeds, and directions) to grow wildflowers from seeds that we collected on the reservation. These wildflowers also make good garden plants. You may keep the plants you grow for your own garden or donate them to the reservation for habitat restoration projects. Note that the planted seeds will need to winter over either outside or in a refrigerator. Plant options include foamflowers, columbines, and species of aster, goldenrod and milkweed. Volunteer Adventure

Date: Monday, November 10
Time: 1 to 3:30 pm
Meeting Place: Huron Ave Gate House (opposite Park Ave)

Take a day off from the gym and join volunteers from MIT in refurbishing hillside paths with wood chips on Huron Ave. Hand tools, gloves, drinking water, instruction and the good company of our Water Department staff will be provided. People of all abilities are welcome. Stay as little or long as you like. Bring a water bottle and be sure to wear shoes that completely cover your feet. First Annual Fresh Pond Great Gobble Give-Back

Date: Saturday, November 22

Do you drink Cambridge tap water? Do you run, walk, bike, yoga or play at Fresh Pond? Show thanks for the clean drinking water and beautiful recreational space Fresh Pond provides - lend a hand! Volunteer activities will include trail maintenance and invasive species removal to protect important habitat and prevent soil erosion. Sturdy, close-toed shoes required; long pants, long sleeves and a water bottle are recommended. All tools are provided, and no experience is necessary! Appropriate for ages 10 and up.
