Crabapple (Malus species)
The cherry-sized apples on this small tree near
Little Fresh Pond look like holiday ornaments
hanging from the branches. They will eventually
become food for hungry birds and rodents as winter
progresses. Most birds cannot swallow a fruit of this
size, and have to wait until freezing and thawing
makes them soft enough to be pecked apart.
