Tree Swallow Nest and Eggs

Today Ranger Jean Rogers and Elizabeth Wylde visited all four of the tree swallow nest boxes that are set up on the Reservation.

Boxes #1, #2, and #3 all had swallows in them. When we tapped on the side, the birds looked out but refused to leave. We took that behavior to mean that the birds were incubating eggs, and we did not open the boxes.

Box #4, the one inside the fence near Little Fresh Pond, was empty. We opened it to find a beautiful nest made of moss and lined with feathers. We were able to reach in with a camera to take these two photographs of the nest and several of at least four eggs. We will not open the boxes again until the young have fledged and left the nests.

Please continue to report any activity you observe in the vicinity of the boxes. Call Ranger Jean at 617-349-4793 or e-mail Elizabeth Wylde at friendsoffreshpond@yahoo.com . Thank you.
