Early Goldenrod
Solidago juncea
The flowering of goldenrods is a reminder that summer
is on the wane. Early Goldenrod is the first of at least
eight goldenrod species that grow on the Reservation.
Once maligned as
the cause of hayfever, goldenrods have been
vindicated. They are insect-pollenated plants with sticky pollen
that never drifts in the air. The true culpret is Ragweed
(Ambrosia artemisiifolia) an inconspicuous plant with green
flowers that grows prolifically at Fresh Pond.
