Tours of the Water Purification Facility

The Cambridge Water Department is offering tours of the City's beautiful Walter J. Sullivan Water Purification Facility. The program will include a virtual tour of the whole Cambridge watershed, using the wall-sized map on the second floor: an explanation of the process by which water that falls as rain in the suburbs 10 miles west of Cambridge is transported to Fresh Pond and made into pure drinking water for our city, and a walk through the purification areas and the lab. Come, and bring your questions.

Chip Norton, Watershed Manager for the Cambridge Water Department, will give tours of Fresh Pond Reservation's conservation areas that have been or are scheduled to be restored. He will answer your questions, and use maps and diagrams to help illustrate the goals for these major projects.

Walks in the Upper Cambridge Watershed

Join Chip Norton, Watershed Manager, on these walks through beautiful land owned by the City of Cambridge as part of our watershed. We will explore woods, meadows, ponds and streams. Ca-pooling can be arranged. Details of individual trips will be given in the monthly program announcements at Upcoming Programs a few weeks before the dates of the walks. Reservation Rambles!

Fresh Pond Kids:Join us on for a walk in the reservation to discover plants and animals living among us. Some recent activities include bird watching, leaf pile jumping, digging in mulch, leaf rubbings, nature collages, book reading, and gathering treasure. Meet at the Water Department Parking lot. Parking passes available for non-Cambridge residents. Bring your own snacks. All walks free and open to all ages. Plant Identification Workshops
with the New England Wildflower Society

Join New England Wildflower Society botanists and Fresh Pond Reservation Volunteer Stewards in learning about the plant communities found at Fresh Pond Reservation. These hands-on workshops will include native and invasive plant identification, training on invasive weed removal, and information on how can help out at Fresh Pond..

 

The Fresh Pond Reservation Stewardship Program

 Dates and Times: Mondays 5:30-7:30, Thursdays 2:00-4:00, May-November
First Sundays 1-4, June-November
Meeting Place :Walter J. Sullivan Water Purification Facility parking lot

In partnership with the Cambridge Water Department, volunteer stewards help maintain native plant communities while learning about the ecology of Fresh Pond Reservation. Upcoming projects include invasive plant monitoring and removal, planting and seed collecting, bird box monitoring, and monitoring specimen trees. Tools and training provided.
