Cambridge Science Festival: April 25 to May 3 Programs at Fresh Pond

The Cambridge Water Department is offering a walking tour and discussion of the City's Walter J. Sullivan Water Purification Facility. Come meet members of the Water Department, learn how our water is purified, and see the inside of this beautiful building.

Discover Blacks Nook Pond

Get your hands wet and learn about the roles of plankton, pond plants, pond organisms and water quality in the Black's Nook ecosystem. During this Cambridge Science Festival program we will also learn how researchers from the Harvard Graduate School of Education use the Nook to develop educational software that models phenomena that can't easily be observed, such as population dynamics.

Enjoy works of art by local artists who found inspiration in the natural surroundings of Fresh Pond Reservation. The show will include art in a variety of mediums, from poetry, painting, drawing to photographs and prints.

Volunteers Wanted for Water Week Celebration for Cambridge Public School Children

Ranger Jean seeks volunteers to assist with a fast-paced, activity-based program for primary school children on the water cycle and Cambridge's Watershed. We'll be working together with the children and their teachers. Three or four adults who like to be with children would really help make this event meaningful and enjoyable. Come Celebrate Fresh Pond Day, a great way to learn about all that is special about the largest open space in Cambridge. The day will feature activities around the Reservation for participants of all ages, with games, live music, tours, demonstrations, and information tables. Native Trees and Shrubs Walks

Meet at the little red brick building next to the Pond.

We will identify and discuss the native tree and shrub species that occur naturally or have been planted as part of the landscape restoration efforts as recommended in the Fresh Pond Masterplan. This will be a short walk to the end of the planted area beyond the main parking lot.

The Fresh Pond Reservation Stewardship Program
Fresh Pond Reservation users are getting involved! The Stewardship Program brings people together on a regular basis to monitor plants, conduct maintenance activities, and to learn about the ecology and history of the area. You can find out about projects that are being planned for this summer, including invasive plants removal, Purple Loosestrife nursery monitoring, bird box monitoring, and more. During these training sessions, New England Wild Flower Society staff will help us learn to recognize common invasive plants. These non-native plants crowd out native species and destroy the habitat of native animals. This information will be useful for gardeners and anyone else who is interested in plants and conservation. All programs will begin at 6:00 pm and meet at the front door of the Water Purification Facility.

The Cambridge Water Department, is offering tours of the City's beautiful Walter J. Sullivan Water Purification Facility. The program will include a power point presentation explaining the process by which water that falls as rain in the suburbs 10 miles west of Cambridge is transported to Fresh Pond and made into pure drinking water for our city. Come, and bring your questions.
