Bumblebees and Seaside Goldenrod
Apparently bumblebees find the nectar-laden flowers of these tall, showy
goldenrod plants (Solidago sempervirens) irresistible. Although
naturally growing only near the northeast coast, these plants also do
well in gardens. The one pictured here is in the planting bed in the
Water Department parking lot. Bumblebees are especially busy now, collecting
nectar and pollen to feed their larvae, which will winter over in underground
nests and emerge as adults in the spring.
