A Reservation Walkabout
Reservation Supervisor Vince Falcione (yellow shirt in photo)
gave us a tour of Black's Nook and the Butterfly Meadow behind Neville
Place. Vince told us some of the history of Black's Nook: Its early
role in the 19th century ice industry, attempts to fill it in (ultimately
unsuccessful), years of neglect, a recent restoration, and now a quiet
spot for contemplation.
In the Butterfly Meadow Vince showed us several American Chestnut cultivars
that have been bred to be resistant to the Chestnut blight. One of the
trees has produced fruit.
