Tree Removal at Kingsley Park
A major restoration of the woods on the top of Kingsley Park has begun
with the removal of a large number of Norway maples (Acer platanoides.)
Norway maples are a non-native species that has become seriously invasive
in woodlands and waste places. It displaces native species and, because
of its numerous surface roots, dense canopy, and alleopathic chemistry,
prevents the growth of understory shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses.
The area will be replanted with native tree species including white
pines, native maples, and oaks; and a large variety of understory plants.
