Black's Nook in Winter
Despite its location - within a few feet of busy Concord Avenue and
adjacent to a green of the Fresh Pond Golf Course, Black's Nook has
the aura of a wilderness pond. In recent years, a dense mat of aquatic
plants has covered much of the surface, indicating that the pond is becoming
increasingly shallow. This process, known as eutrophication, is the
result of excess growth due to fertilizer runoff. Unless the pond is
dredged, this area will eventually become a swamp, then a meadow, and
finally, woods.
