Tulip Poplar or Tulip Tree, Liriodendron tulipifera
This exotic structure is just the leftover stalk and sepals of the flower of the Tulip tree. The seeds have already dispersed. The showy yellow and orange flowers appear in May or June. Tulip poplars are not related to tulips or poplars, but the flowers do look like tulips.
