          Little Bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium
This graceful plant is a Massachusetts native as well as a native of
the tallgrass prairies of the midwest. Because it grows in a clump,
it has ornamental value as well as wildlife value. The yellow grasses
in the background is Switchgrass, Panicum virgatum, another native
bunchgrass. Both species have high wildlife value, both as food and
shelter. Because they are deep-rooted perennials, they hold the soil
          and are very drought- resistant.
