Wolves of The Forest Floor: Terrestrial Salamanders
Brooks Mathewson, award-winning nature photographer and ecologist,
gave a talk and slide show on the ecology of the most abundant vertebrates
in the forest - terrestrial salamanders. These organisms are critical
indicators of the health of our environment. In addition, they play
a vital role in reducing the amount of carbon dioxide released into
the atmosphere. Brooks is currently conducting a study of these salamanders
at Fresh Pond Reservation. At the end of the program we helped Brooks
(shown here) place some of the hemlock boards that are part of his study,
and are known to attract salamanders, which like to hide under them.
