Lichens
This is a close-up photo of the trunk of an American Elm growing in the Water Department parking lot. The dense covering of lichens is considered to be an indicator of clean air. Prevailing winds in this location blow from Belmont across the golf course and the Pond, so the air is likely to be free from many of the common industrial pollutions.
