Blue Flag Iris, Iris versicolor
This native wetland wildflower has been reintroduced into a cove adjacent
to the Black's Nook boardwalk. Before the area was restored, the aggressive,
invasive non-native Yellow Iris, Iris pseudoacorus, had dominated
the shoreline. Native plant species often support native insect populations
which in turn may support birds and other animals, and natives tend
not to overgrow the habitats in which they have evolved.
