Mountain Laurel, Kalmia latifolia
The 10-sided, bowl-shaped flowers of members of the genus Kalmia are
fascinating. The male reproductive parts (stamens) are bent outward
from near the middle, and tucked into small pockets that are marked
here with red spots. When an insect lands to collect nectar, it dislodges
the stamens that then spring inward, dusting the insect with pollen
which it then carries to the next flower, thereby aiding reproduction.
Laurel buds also have an intriguing, balloon-like appearance. These
shrubs are broadleaf evergreens that grow well in cool, moist, acidic,
partly sunny conditions.
