January 13, 2013 Whole Tree Identification Large free-standing trees near Neville Place and on the golf course were the focus of this program. We identified these trees by their overall structure and branching patterns, observations that are most easily made in winter, when the trees have lost their cloak of leaves. In these photos, the group looks, together, at a tree being described by Elizabeth Wylde (with clipboard); we gather around a pin oak on the golf course; Susan Coolidge (brown coat) takes apart a sycamore ball to show the seeds ; and indoors, Stacy Kilb from the Mass. Department of Agricultural Resources, holds up an example of infestation by the Asian longhorn beetle, a recently introduced pest that is a future threat to our local trees. |
