Tree Swallow Nesting Box
On March 28, two volunteers and a water department staff member worked
together to put up the 15 tree swallow boxes that have been part of
a an annual rite of spring on the Reservation since 2004. Tree Swallows
were observed inspecting one of the boxes on Monday, April 1. Soon the
birds will be claiming boxes, building nests, and raising their young.
Tree swallows feed on insects while flying. They consume large numbers
of the insects that like to feed on humans, e.g. mosquitoes.
This is one of two boxes in the Lusitania Meadow.
