American Coots

Although they look like small ducks, these birds are actually members of the Rail Family, a family that includes Clapper and King Rails, as well as Gallinules. The feet of the Coot are lobed, not webbed, making them less-efficient swimmers than ducks. They compensate by bobbing their heads forward and back, somewhat the way a chicken does.
