Tree Swallow in Residence
Soon after the nesting boxes were put back up for the season, tree swallows
were inspecting them. There followed many a skirmish as the birds competed
for these prime nesting facilities. By now, many of the 15 swallow boxes
are occupied, and the birds are building nests. This photo is of the
box located adjacent to the Water Department, overlooking the pond.
A swallow sits, guarding the entrance from other swallows and house
sparrows, which also compete for the boxes.
