Bark of Mature White Swamp Oak (Quercus bicolor)
The bark of a swamp white oak is gray and scaly. On older trunks
(as shown) it develops irregular furrows (fissures) and ridges.
In previous years when attempting to identify a tree, I never considered
examining a tree's bark until after I attended "Wild Trees at Fresh
Pond"
(See March 27, 2011 calendar photo link). Unsure of the identify of
this
tree, I returned to photograph the tree's bark. Ranger Jean Rogers said
(in tree identification) that the "Two things that don't change
with baby and
mature trees are the buds and fruit".
