          Nesting Box
This is what was in the nesting box near Little Fresh Pond when I opened
it for inspection today: The twig nest was built and used by house wrens.
The nest below it, made of pine needles, was built by another small
bird of unknown species. The light material at the bottom is wood shavings
that we put in because we were told that this encourages nesting by
black-capped chickadees. The nests were removed so that the box will
be available when the nesting season for chickadees begins in March.
This box is suitable for a variety of small birds, including downy woodpeckers
and nuthatches as well as the wrens and chickadees.
