Eastern White Pines (Pinus strobus) at Weir Meadow
Passing Weir Meadow along Perimeter Road, this mother and child are
dwarfed by Eastern White Pines. The Eastern White Pines are large trees
with very straight trunks with a height of well over 100 feet. They
once were the tallest trees in the forests of Eastern North America,
some reaching 300 feet in height. Because their strong, straight trunks
made excellent masts for sailing ships, all of the tallest ones were
cut down during the 1700's.
