Goldenrod and Aster Identification
The abundance of goldenrod and aster species in New England makes
for colorful woods and meadows in the fall, and challenges for beginners
who want to identify them. At Fresh Pond Reservation, the Kingsley Bioswale
is an ideal outdoor classroom for meeting this challenge: There are
about 11 species of aster growing there, and nearby there are at least
6 species of goldenrod.
Here, participants and walk leader Barbara Strell (with backpack) are
examining the details of Small White Asters (Symphiotrichum racemosum.)
