Great Blue Heron at Work
If you have patience, you can observe the fishing techniques of the
Great Blue Heron. It stands perfectly still for long periods and, even
when stalking through the pond weeds, somehow manages to appear motionless.
Suddenly, it strikes the water with its large dagger-like bill. It usually
comes up with a fish or frog, which it flips around so that the prey
can be swallowed headfirst. The bird's long neck bulges as the meal
slides down to its stomach. No need to chew!
