          Women at Work
Suzanna Black (wearing black) and Betsy Meyer waged a successful campaign
to remove glossy and common buckthorns (Frangula alnus and
Rhamnus cathartica) from the woods near the Woodland Restoration
Demonstration Project. These invasive trees are spread by birds that
eat the tempting but low-in-nutrition berries. The plants grow so densely
that they crowd out native understory woody plants and wildflowers.
The women used Weed Wrenches(the orange devices), pruning saws, and
muscle power to remove the trees, including the roots.
