Winter Investigations in Lusitania Wet Meadow
In this family friendly program, both children and adults learned how
animals and plants survive winter. as well as how to identify which
tracks belong to which animal. In addition, participants examined various
animal tracks (rabbit, et al) and learned which tracks belong to which
animal.
Left Photo - A young participant examines coyote tracks which
fall in pairs when they trot (the fore print and the hind print) as
a way to conserve energy.
Middle Photo - Ranger Jean Rogers (green jacket with backpack)
showed participants "mouse, condominiums" - burrows where field
mice live during winter. The snow insulates these tunnels (like a blanket)
by keeping the colder air out.
Right Photo - Both children and adults enjoyed this enormous
American Beech (Fagus grandifolia).
