Asian Longhorned Beetle Monitoring Workshop
Amanda Meisner, Forest Pest Outreach Coordinator for the Massachusetts
Department of Agricultural Resources, gave a PowerPoint presentation
about these invasive alien beetles that are a threat to suburban and
forest trees wherever they appear. The beetles were accidentally brought
to this country in the wood of pallets used for shipping. Recently an
outbreak in Worcester forced the removal of thousands of trees throughout
the city. We learned how to recognize beetle holes in vulnerable tree
species (including maple, ash, elm, horse chestnut and birch), then
went outside and used binoculars to look at the upper branches of trees
where the beetles would most likely be found.
