River Birch Bark (Betula nigra)

The colors of this River Birch's bark identifies it as a younger tree. Maturing trees have multi-colored bark of brown, bronze, gray, salmon and white that peels loose horizontally in ragged papery strips. On mature trees, the bark's color ranges frombrown to black.
