Berries
and Bushes Identification
Left Photo: Due to rain - the activity was held in the cafeteria
of the Water Treatment Facility. Despite the rain, Ranger Jean Rogers
(left) lead a user friendly hands on program that was both informative
and entertaining. Her program included a discussion with all the attendees
participating.
Middle photo: Northern Bayberry, Myrica pensylvanica
The fruits of bayberry are covered with a white waxycoating - which
can be used to make candles.
Right photo: Mountain Holly, Ilex montana
Mountain Holly is a shrub with deciduous leaves (deciduous means that
the leaves fall off in the fall). The drupes are bright red and last
through the winter - which is why another common name for it is Mountain
Winterberry. Drupes are the fleshy part of a fruit that encloses a single
hard stone ("pit"). Examples are a Cherry, Peach, or Plum.
