A Fallen Giant
About a month ago, on a windy night, the top of this enormous Pin Oak
(Quercus palustrus) snapped off. The remaining snag reveals that
the entire center is rotten. The fallen tree will remain on the ground,
gradually decomposing and returning its nutrients to the soil while
providing food and habitat for an assortment of fungi, insects, and
small mammals.
