American Filbert, Corylus americana
Although the female flowers of the filbert are minute, their intense magenta color makes them worth looking at. The catkins are the male pollen-producing flowers. On each plant the male and female flowers will mature at different times, thereby avoiding self-fertilization, which sometimes produces weaker offspring.
