Sallow Sedge, Carex lurida
The spiky cylinders on this native wetland sedge are the female flowers.
The narrow silvery structure visible below them contains the male, pollen-producing
flowers. Each spikelet on the female cluster has an air-filled sac at
the base. Later in the season the structure will break apart, releasing
the seeds, perhaps to float to a new location.
