          Witch Hazel, Hamamelis vernalis
The flowers of this Witch Hazel cultivar are an intense yellow with
red highlights. This species is a southern relative of the native Witch
Hazel, Hamamelis virgineana, that flowers late in the fall. Although
the larger pollinating insects are not active when these cold-weather
flowers are open, tiny gnats that take wing on sunny days like this
          one, do the job.
