Survey of Aquatic Plants at Black's Nook
In spite of rain, participants in this program were attracted by the
prospect of finding out what plants grow in this small pond on the Reservation.
Leader Barbara Strell (black shirt) demonstrated the use of a double-sided
rake on a rope that was thrown into the water and pulled back loaded
with plants. Indoors, we used aquatic plant keys to make identifications.
Plants we identified are listed below.
Ceratophyllum: Coontail
Polygonum: Emergent Smartweed
Lemna: Duckweed
Spirodela polyrhiza: Big Duckweed
All above plants
are native to North American ponds.
