Groton Geology Field Trip
Nine members of Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation who are participants
in the Fresh Pond Reading Group drove from Cambridge to the Groton home
of fellow member Suzanna Black to enjoy a day of exploring glacial formations.
Suzanna's friends Bob Pine, an amateur geologist (in left photo, wearing
shorts), and Bob Gamlin, longtime Groton resident and landowner (green
cap) led the tour. They showed us kettleholes, eskers, drumlins, glacial
eratics and dramatic cliffs such as the one in the right photo, where
we stopped to rest next to a beaver pond.
The trip was scheduled in anticipation of the next meeting of the Reading
Group, when we will discuss Written in Stone, a book about the
geology of New England written by Chet and Maureen Raymo.
