Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum)

The flowers of the silver maple are the earliest to bloom among the large deciduous trees on the Reservation. The large round buds are visible all winter. In February they begin to swell, and by the end of March the flowers will be spent. Soon thereafter, one can observe small seeds, which already have the familiar shape known as "keys."
