Aquatic Weeds at Fresh Pond
Michelle Robinson (standing) of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation
and Recreation's Lakes and Ponds Program came to the Maynard Ecology
Center to give a program about invasive aquatic weeds for Friends of
Fresh Pond Reservation. Michelle brought a variety of native and non-native
pond species for us to examine and identify, and the Friends group contributed
4 samples from Black's Nook. After Michelle showed us how to use the
New England Aquarium's "Guide to Aquatic Plants in Massachusetts,"
we identified all of the specimens.
The good news from
Black's Nook was that 3 of the 4 specimens were native (coontail, elodea,
and smartweed.) The one invasive, water chestnut, is being monitored
and removed by volunteer extraordinaire Roger Frymeier.
