Yellow Sweet Clover and White Sweet Clover
Melilotus officinalis and M. alba
These clovers can be found growing in unmowed meadow areas at Fresh Pond Resevation. They are members of the Legume Family. Legumes have nodules in their roots that contain bacteria which have the ability to "fix" atmospheric nitrogen. This allows the plants to grow in nitrogen-poor soils.
