The Green Mountains of Fresh Pond
These mounds of sifted topsoil at the Lusitania Field staging area have
a greenish hue due to a binding agent that was sprayed on them to prevent
the soil from washing away during the winter. The original plan was
to distribute the soil around the Northeast Sector restoration areas
last fall, but unusually wet weather left the ground too easily compressed
to allow heavy soil-moving equipment on it.
