Climacocystis
borealis
These white bracket fungi were found growing on a hemlock stump on the
top of Kingsley Park. This species of polypore grows only on living
or dead conifers.
Pholiota squarrosoides
Sharp-scaly Pholiota
These common gilled mushrooms were growing on a log in the woods south
of Little Fresh Pond. They appear in the fall, and only on deciduous
wood.
Hypoxylon fragiforme
Beech Hypoxylon
Hundreds of these hard, tiny (about 1 cm.) fungi were found on a beech
log on the Huron Avenue hillside. A 10x lens revealed tiny pimples,
which are the openings through which spores are expelled.
