Trout Lily, Dogtooth Violet
Erythronium americanum
A patch of these small lilies survives at Fresh Pond amid the buckthorns
and poison ivy. Plants such as these are known as "spring ephemerals"
because they come up and bloom early, before the trees leave out, and
by midsummer have died back to the ground and disappeared until the
following spring.
