Cow Vetch, Vicia cracca
The bright purple racemes of this vine growing in the Water Department bio-swale were quite striking. Vetches and clovers, both members of the Legume Family, can grow in soils with low nitrogen levels because they have the ability to "fix" atmospheric nitrogen into useable nitrates.
